About This Route
Experience the ultimate balance of comfort and altitude safety with Tanzania Kili Adventures on our 6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Trek. Widely celebrated as the classic path up Mount KilimanjaroClick to open side panel for more information, the 6-day itinerary builds in an essential acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,720m). This additional day allows your body to adapt safely to thinning oxygen levels, dramatically increasing your chance of successfully standing on Uhuru Peak (5,895m). As the only trail equipped with solar-powered wooden sleeping huts, Marangu eliminates the need for sleeping in wilderness ground tents. You will hike through five distinct climate zones from lush tropical rainforests filled with colobus monkeys to heath, alpine desert, and glacier summit rims. Guided by our elite mountain leaders, high-altitude chefs, and dedicated porters, this package offers a comfortable, highly successful expedition to the Roof of Africa.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
1
Day 1: Base Hotel to Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)
After breakfast and a gear check at your hotel, drive through local villages to Marangu Gate. Register with national park authorities while your mountain crew organizes supplies. Begin your trek through a lush rainforest canopy dripping with moss and ferns. Listen for bird calls and watch for colobus monkeys swinging overhead. Reach Mandara Hut by late afternoon. Take an acclimatization walk to the nearby Maundi Crater for panoramic views over Northern Tanzania and Kenya before dinner.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail opens into high-altitude moorlands lined with giant heather plants and lobelias. Trek at a steady, slow pace (Pole Pole) while soaking in initial views of Mawenzi and Kibo volcanic peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut by mid-afternoon. Unpack in your hut, enjoy hot drinks served by your crew, and watch the sun set over the clouds below.

Day 3: Horombo Hut – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY (Hike to Zebra Rocks)
Today is your dedicated acclimatization day the secret to a high summit success rate! Following breakfast, embark on a scenic hike up to the unique Zebra Rocks (4,020m), named after their striking black-and-white mineral stripes. Practicing the "climb high, sleep low" rule gives your red blood cells time to adjust to decreasing oxygen levels. Return to Horombo Hut for a warm lunch, rest during the afternoon, and prepare for the higher altitude ahead.
4
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Hike through the "Saddle" a vast alpine desert plateau connecting Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain becomes rocky and sparse, with views of Kibo's massive crater wall. Reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Your guide will perform a vital gear inspection, check your oxygen saturation levels, and review midnight summit safety protocols. Eat an early dinner and sleep by 7:00 PM to maximize rest before your summit attempt.
5
Day 5: SUMMIT DAY! Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak down to Horombo Hut
Wake up at 11:30 PM for hot tea and snacks. Begin your midnight push, hiking up loose volcanic scree under the light of your headlamp. Reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim at dawn, rewarded by a stunning sunrise above the clouds. Trek another 1.5 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) the Roof of Africa! Celebrate, snap photos, and admire the glaciers. Descend back to Kibo Hut for lunch and rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi / Arusha
Enjoy a final breakfast on the mountain before descending through moorland and dense rainforest. Arrive at Marangu Gate to sign out with park authorities.
