Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
1
Day 1: Base Hotel to Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After a morning briefing and gear check at your hotel, drive through coffee and banana farms to Machame Gate. Complete registration formalities while meeting your mountain guides and porters. The trail starts with a winding path through a dense, dripping rainforest. Listen for exotic bird calls and spot black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy. The trail gradually steepens as you exit the tree line, arriving at Machame Camp by late afternoon for dinner and your first night under canvas.
2
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs across a steep ridge into the open heath and moorland zone. You will cross a rocky valley with giant lobelias and heather shrubs. Continuing west onto the Shira Plateau one of the highest plateaus on Earth you will take in sweeping views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach. Reach Shira 2 Camp in time to relax, enjoy hot beverages, and watch a magnificent sunset over the clouds.
3
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Today is crucial for acclimatization as you put the "climb high, sleep low" principle into action. Hike east across the alpine desert landscape towards the towering volcanic formation of Lava Tower (4,630m), where you will enjoy lunch and allow your red blood cells to adapt to thin air. Afterward, descend through the Great Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant groundsels, to reach Barranco Camp situated below the formidable Barranco Wall.
4
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin the day with the exciting scramble up the famous Barranco Wall (4,200m). While it looks intimidating, it is a non-technical scramble guided step-by-step by your team. At the top, savor incredible views of Kibo’s southern glaciers. The trail then traverses a series of ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley. Arrive at Karanga Camp by early afternoon for lunch, rest, and acclimatization.
5
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Leave Karanga Camp and join the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Trek steadily uphill through a barren alpine desert landscape to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m). "Barafu" means "ice" in Swahili, and this desolate camp sits exposed on a rocky, wind-swept ridge. Your guide will inspect your summit gear, check your pulse oximeter readings, and review midnight safety strategies. Eat an early dinner and go to sleep by 7:00 PM in preparation for the summit push.
6
Day 6: SUMMIT DAY! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak down to Mweka Camp
Wake up at 11:30 PM for warm tea and snacks. Begin your midnight summit attempt, navigating steep volcanic scree under a starry sky. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim at dawn for a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Continue another hour along the snow-draped crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) the highest point in Africa! Celebrate, snap photos, and admire the ancient glaciers. Descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night.
7
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi / Arusha
Savor your final breakfast on the mountain before taking a pleasant descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Official green certificates are issued to hikers who reached Stella Point, and gold summit certificates are awarded to those who reached Uhuru Peak! Join your mountain guides, chefs, and porters for a joyous farewell singing and tipping ceremony. Your Tanzania Kili Adventures vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a shower and celebration.
