Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
1
Day 1: Base Hotel to Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)
Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your base hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After a thorough gear inspection and safety briefing with your lead guide, embark on a scenic 3 to 4-hour drive around the eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, passing colorful Chagga villages, coffee plantations, and rural farmlands near the border of Kenya. Upon arrival at Rongai Gate, register with the national park authorities while your mountain crew organizes camp gear, food provisions, and luggage.
The trek starts along a quiet, uncrowded trail winding through managed pine and cypress plantations before transitioning into dense, natural cloud forest. The pace is slow and deliberate (Pole Pole), giving your body time to adjust to the trail. Keep your eyes open for black-and-white colobus monkeys leaping across the tree canopy and listen for exotic mountain birds overhead. As the forest begins to thin out near the upper boundary, emerge into the heathland zone to arrive at Simba Camp ("Lion Camp") in the late afternoon. Here, your mountain crew will have set up your private wilderness tents. Enjoy hot beverages and snacks while soaking in panoramic views across the Amboseli plains of Kenya as the sun sets over the African savanna.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp
Wake up to warm washing water and a freshly cooked breakfast prepared by your high-altitude chef. Today's hike takes you out of the forest canopy and directly into open, expansive moorlands filled with giant heather shrubs, flowering proteas, and wild mountain grasses. The trail ascends steadily with Kibo Peak looming ahead in the distance, providing a magnificent backdrop throughout the morning walk.Around mid-day, reach Second Cave ($3,450\text{m}$), a historic shelter point on the northern circuit where you will stop for a hot, freshly prepared lunch and a well-deserved rest. From Second Cave, the trail turns east toward the dramatic, jagged volcanic formation of Mawenzi Peak. The terrain becomes drier and rockier as you cross open moorland ridges, crossing small mountain streams fed by high-altitude glacial runoff. Arrive at Kikelelwa Camp by late afternoon, situated in a sheltered valley surrounded by giant groundsels (Senecio kilimanjari). After relaxing in camp, enjoy a nutritious multi-course dinner followed by an evening health check using a pulse oximeter to monitor your heart rate and oxygen saturation levels.

Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Today’s trek is intentionally short in distance but involves a steep, rewarding incline as you climb into the true alpine desert zone. Leaving Kikelelwa Camp behind, the vegetation quickly thins out from shrubby moorland into sparse alpine desert terrain marked by loose volcanic rock, scree, and rugged terrain. You will notice the temperature dropping and the air feeling noticeably thinner as you gain elevation.
The trail leads directly toward the majestic, razor-sharp rock spires of Mawenzi Peak—Kilimanjaro's second-highest volcanic crater. By early afternoon, arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, one of the most uniquely scenic campsites on the entire mountain. The camp is set in a sheltered amphitheater directly beneath the towering rock walls of Mawenzi, beside a rare high-altitude alpine lake (tarn). After settling into your tents, spend the afternoon resting, drinking plenty of fluids, and allowing your body to acclimatize naturally. The sunset view from Mawenzi Tarn over the clouds below is a photographer's dream.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY (Hike towards Mawenzi Ridge)
Today is a vital acclimatization day built specifically into your 7-day schedule to ensure maximum safety and a high summit success rate. Practicing the proven mountaineering philosophy of "climb high, sleep low," your body will produce additional red blood cells to adapt to decreasing atmospheric pressure before you push on to higher camps. After a leisurely breakfast, embark on a scenic 2 to 3-hour round-trip acclimatization hike up the slopes leading toward Mawenzi Ridge (4,500m).
As you climb higher, enjoy dramatic views of Mawenzi's sheer rock faces, jagged spires, and sweeping views west across the high-altitude Saddle toward Kibo Peak. Return to Mawenzi Tarn Camp in time for a warm, delicious lunch prepared by your chef. Spend the entire afternoon resting, reading, chatting with your mountain crew, and hydrating. This deliberate day of rest ensures you stay energized and strong for the final two days of summit climbing.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Depart Mawenzi Tarn Camp after breakfast and cross the vast, desolate landscape known as the "Saddle" a wide alpine desert plateau connecting the volcanic peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain here resembles a moonscape, characterized by volcanic ash, dry gravel, and stark open horizons devoid of vegetation due to high mountain winds and freezing temperatures.
Trek at a slow, deliberate pace across this expanse, under the looming shadow of Kibo's massive crater wall. Reach Kibo Hut in the early afternoon, where the northern Rongai trail converges with the Marangu route. Upon arrival at base camp, settle into your tents and rest immediately. Your lead guide will perform a thorough summit safety briefing, inspect your winter layers, headlamps, trekking poles, and thermal water flasks, and measure your oxygen levels. Eat a light, carbohydrate-rich dinner early at 5:30 PM and retire to your sleeping bag by 7:00 PM to get as much sleep as possible before your midnight summit attempt.
