Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Day 1: Base Hotel to Machame Gate to Machame Camp
11 km 5 to 7 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Your mountain expedition begins with a morning pickup from your base hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After a comprehensive gear inspection and safety briefing with your lead guide, enjoy a 1-hour drive through lush Chagga coffee and banana villages to Machame Gate. Complete national park registration while your mountain crew organizes camp gear, provisions, and luggage.

The trek begins on a winding dirt path leading directly into the dense, moss-draped tropical rainforest. Maintain a slow, deliberate pace (Pole Pole) to allow your lungs and legs to adjust smoothly to the trail. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys leaping across the tree canopy and listen for exotic mountain birds overhead. As you climb higher, the forest thins out near the ridge line, bringing you to Machame Camp by late afternoon. Your crew will have set up your private wilderness tents. Settle in, enjoy hot drinks, and relax as the sun sets over the clouds.
2
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
5 km 4 to 6 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Wake up to warm washing water and a hot breakfast cooked by your high-altitude chef. Today's hike takes you out of the rainforest canopy and directly onto a steep, rocky ridge entering the open heath and moorland zones. You will trek through giant heather shrubs, wild mountain grasses, and unique lobelias while crossing small rocky streams.

As you gain elevation, the trail crosses the expansive Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus on Earth. From the plateau, enjoy sweeping panoramic views of Kibo Peak's snow-capped summit standing in the distance and the Western Breach. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp by early afternoon in time for a hot lunch. Spend the remainder of the afternoon resting, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking photographs of the surrounding volcanic landscapes. In the evening, watch a memorable sunset as the clouds drop below the camp elevation.
3
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
10 km 6 to 8 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Today is a vital day for acclimatization as you put the proven mountaineering rule of "climb high, sleep low" into full effect. Leaving Shira 2 Camp, hike east across the stark, rocky alpine desert landscape toward the towering volcanic formation of Lava Tower (4,630m). Reaching this elevation helps trigger your body to produce extra red blood cells, adapting to thin oxygen levels.Stop at the base of Lava Tower for a hot lunch and rest before starting your descent into the Great Barranco Valley.

The descent route winds through scenic gardens of giant groundsels (Senecio kilimanjari) and towering lobelias. Arrive at Barranco Camp by late afternoon, situated in a sheltered valley directly beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. Relax, enjoy hot beverages, and prepare mentally for the fun scramble awaiting you the next morning.
4
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
9 km 8 to 10 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Start your day with an exciting non-technical scramble up the famous Barranco Wall (4,200m). Under the step-by-step guidance of your expert mountain guides, navigate the rocky face to reach the top, where you are rewarded with sweeping views of Kibo's southern glaciers. From the top of the wall, traverse a series of hills and gullies down into the Karanga Valley, where you will stop at Karanga Camp for a warm lunch and rest. After lunch, continue your upward trek out of Karanga Valley, joining the Mweka junction trail.

Ascend steadily through a barren, wind-swept alpine desert landscape to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m) by late afternoon. Perched on a rocky, exposed ridge, Barafu serves as your high base camp for the summit attempt. Settle into your tents, eat an early carbohydrate-rich dinner by 5:30 PM, complete your summit safety checks with your lead guide, and get to sleep by 7:00 PM.
5
Day 5: SUMMIT DAY! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak down to Mweka Camp
5 km ascent / 12 km descent (17 km total) 6 to 8 hours ascent / 5 to 7 hours descent Midnight Tea/Snacks, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Your guide will wake you at 11:30 PM with hot tea and light biscuits. Dress in all your thermal layers, adjust your headlamp, and begin your midnight summit push around 12:00 AM. Navigate steep, loose volcanic scree under a brilliant blanket of stars, following your guide's steady pace (Pole Pole). The mental and physical effort is real as temperatures drop below freezing, but your team will keep you motivated every step of the way.Reach Stella Point (5,756m) on Kibo’s crater rim at dawn, greeted by a golden sunrise over Mawenzi Peak and the cloud layer below.

Continue another hour along the snow-draped crater rim past ancient glaciers to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) the highest point on the African continent! Celebrate your triumph, take photographs at the famous summit sign, and absorb the breathtaking views from the Roof of Africa. Afterward, descend back to Barafu Camp for a hot lunch and rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
6
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi / Arusha
10 km 3 to 4 hours Breakfast, Lunch (Half Board)
Enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain surrounded by the morning calls of rainforest birds before starting your final descent down to Mweka Gate. Walk through the lush, emerald rainforest canopy filled with giant ferns, moss-covered trees, and vocal monkeys. The trail is easy on the lungs as oxygen increases with every downward step.

Arrive at Mweka Gate by early afternoon to sign out officially with the national park authorities. Climbers who reached Stella Point receive official green certificates, while those standing on Uhuru Peak are awarded official gold summit certificates! Join your mountain guides, high-altitude chef, and hardworking porters for a celebratory tipping ceremony and mountain singing. Afterward, step into your private Tanzania Kili Adventures transfer vehicle for the drive back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a long-awaited hot shower and celebration dinner.
