Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Day 1: Base Hotel to Londorossi Gate to Lemosho Trailhead to Mti Mkubwa Camp
6 km 3 to 4 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
After breakfast and a briefing at your hotel, drive west to Londorossi Gate for registration. Continue along a bumpy forest track to the Lemosho Glades trailhead. Begin hiking along a peaceful, quiet trail winding through a lush, moss-draped rainforest. Spot colobus monkeys and exotic birds in the canopy before arriving at Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
8 km 5 to 6 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Exit the forest zone as the trail climbs steadily through heather and moorland. You will cross several streams and hike across a ridge leading onto the vast Shira Plateau. Enjoy initial panoramic views of Kibo Peak across the plateau. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp for lunch, rest, and an evening under stars above the cloud line.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Today is a gentle hike across the high-altitude Shira Plateau designed for acclimatization. Trek east toward Kibo’s glacier-crested peak, exploring the rocky geological formations around Shira Cathedral. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in time for a hot lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing, enjoying hot beverages, and taking photographs of the surrounding volcanic scenery.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
10 km 6 to 8 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Put the essential "climb high, sleep low" rule into practice today. Trek east through alpine desert terrain up to the iconic Lava Tower (4,630m), where you will eat lunch and allow your body to adapt to the thin air. Afterward, descend into the scenic Great Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant groundsels, to reach Barranco Camp situated beneath the Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
5 km 4 to 5 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Begin the morning with a non-technical scramble up the famous Barranco Wall (4,200m). Guided step-by-step by your team, reach the top for breathtaking views of Kibo’s southern glaciers. The trail then traverses a series of hills and gullies before descending into the Karanga Valley. Reach Karanga Camp by early afternoon for lunch and rest.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4 km 3 to 4 hours Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Leave Karanga Camp and climb steadily uphill across a barren alpine desert landscape to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m). Perched on a wind-swept, rocky ridge, Barafu serves as your base camp for the summit push. Your guide will inspect your summit gear, check your pulse oximeter readings, and review safety protocols. Eat an early dinner and sleep by 7:00 PM.

Day 7: SUMMIT DAY! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak down to Mweka Camp
5 km ascent / 12 km descent (17 km total) 6 to 8 hours ascent / 5 to 7 hours descent Midnight Tea/Snacks, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Full Board)
Wake up at 11:30 PM for warm drinks and snacks. Begin your midnight summit push, navigating steep volcanic scree under a blanket of stars. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim at sunrise for spectacular morning views. Continue another hour along the snow-carpeted crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) the highest point in Africa! Celebrate, snap photos, and admire the ancient glaciers. Descend back to Barafu Camp for a hot lunch and rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi / Arusha
10 km 3 to 4 hours Breakfast, Lunch (Half Board)
Enjoy a final mountain breakfast before making a pleasant descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Official green certificates are issued to hikers who reached Stella Point, and gold summit certificates are awarded to those reaching Uhuru Peak! Join your mountain guides, chefs, and porters for a celebratory tipping ceremony. Your Tanzania Kili Adventures vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a shower and celebration.
